During the week of October 14-18, students in all three divisions came together to support communities in western North Carolina that were impacted by Hurricane Helene.

The hurricane devastated parts of the southern United States, including North Carolina. As students learned during Chapel presentations, many communities there were still without basic necessities like running water weeks after the hurricane ripped through in late September. Many schools were closed for weeks.

Caroline Dailey ‘27 and Hayden Hoover ‘27 started the effort; Hayden's parents are owners of Xylem Tree, a company that does tree removal and has done much work since Helene made landfall. Their vision was for students to donate enough household items to fill a moving truck that would go to the affected areas. Among the items they asked for: Diapers, wipes, clothing, batteries, and blankets.

Filling a truck and keeping inventory of every item is not an easy job. Hayden and Caroline, who are both Global Health Fellows in the Batten Leadership Program, enlisted the help of other Fellows and clubs, including the Middle School One Love Club and Monogram Club in the Upper School. Fourth grade boys also lent a hand in the Lower School.

Each day during the week, students came up big. They brought in items, gradually filling the truck. On Friday, Caroline and Hayden announced a success: “We're so grateful that you all helped out to support the community in western North Carolina," they said, standing inside a full truck. “We're really proud of all the work that has been done this week. You all have done a great job with the drive, and we filled the truck on the last day. Great job to the whole school for helping out!"
