How long have you been at Norfolk Academy?
This is my eighth year as a teacher, and I was here for 12 years as a student.
Tell us why you wanted to become an educator:
Several inspirational teachers/mentors I had as a student were big influences in deciding to become a teacher, especially (former physics teacher) Col. Charlie Merriam and (ninth grade biology teacher) Mr. Scott Fowler.
What most excites you about working at Norfolk Academy?
The faculty and students are excited about being here every day and there is a great sense of community.
Norfolk Academy is unique because…
...teachers and students are able to develop relationships that extend beyond the classroom. I enjoy interacting with students by working on physics and computer science in the morning, and then being able to spend time with the same student-athletes in the afternoon on the football and baseball fields.
What do you like to do in your own time/when you’re not working?
Spend time with friends and family, take photos, go to the beach or walk the dogs with my fiancée, surf, bike, referee basketball, and attend athletic events
Last book read:
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
A movie is being made about your life. Whom would they cast to play you?
Nick Merklin (former Middle School math and science teacher), if he would shave his beard again.
Fun fact your students might not know about you/might find surprising:
I completed a bike tour from Minneapolis to Toronto in the summer of 2017 to cross three more MLB stadiums off my list, leaving just two I haven’t visited (Texas and St. Louis).
“When I grow up, I want to be…”
...I don't know what I want to be when I grow up!
