How long have you been at Norfolk Academy?
This is my fourth year as a teacher at Norfolk Academy. I also attended Norfolk Academy from 8th-12th grade, so technically it is year nine!
Tell us why you wanted to become an educator:
I did not know I wanted to be an educator until I started teaching! I focused much of my time, course work, and extra-curricular experiences in college to pursue a career in medicine. As my time at Duke was drawing to an end, I thought about taking a break before jumping into medical school. That is when I landed an incredible opportunity teaching math and science at the Durham Nativity School. The students and faculty go on a back to school retreat before classes start in August – by the end of the week, I knew I landed in what would become my career.
What most excites you about working at Norfolk Academy?
Coming to work at Norfolk Academy does not feel like “work”! Everything about my day - whether teaching in the classroom, working with the Global Health Fellows, coaching, or enjoying the company of students at lunch - is enjoyable and an opportunity for personal growth or support in the growth of our students.
Last book read:
Bringing Up Bebe by Pamela Druckerman – I did a lot of reading in preparation for the April arrival of Baby Goodson!
Norfolk Academy is unique because…
...of the relationships between faculty, staff, and students!
What do you like to do in your own time/when you’re not working?
So many things! Walking the dog, knitting, baking, reading, yoga-ing, spinning, cheering on the Duke Blue Devils, and spending time with my husband and son.
Sushi, ice cream, and an everything bagel from Yorgo’s Bageldashery (in no particular order).
A movie is being made about your life. Who would they cast to play you?
I polled a lot of friends on this one and the most recurrent response was Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper!
Fun fact your students might not know about you/might find surprising:
I am a black belt in Aikido, a Japanese martial art.
“When I grow up, I want to be…”
...a professional baker specializing in cookies and cakes for special events!
