Monogram Club Extends Reach to South Africa

Between academics, fine arts, athletics, fellowships, international travel, and service clubs, students at Norfolk Academy can put their time and talent to use in a multitude of ways. One such way is in joining a club with the intent of making a difference.
While the Monogram Club is technically a spirit club, the members do more than support the student-athletes. The club, which has been in existence since some students’ parents – and even grandparents – attended the school, honors school spirit by creating theme nights at athletic events, organizing Spirit Week, and recognizing athletes of the week. The 2017-18 co-presidents of the club were Greer Gill ’18 and George Stedfast ’18.
“My family went to South Africa when my sister (Ainsley Gill ’14) graduated,” said Greer. “We went to Langa Township in Cape Town, where we met the coach for Wanderers Football Club. After getting to know him, we bought some jerseys for the team.”
The Gills stayed in touch with the coach ever since that trip nearly four years ago. When Greer became co-president of the Monogram Club her junior year, she was determined to continue to help the soccer team. So, she pitched the idea to the Monogram Club, and they decided to make it their mission to raise money for the team to purchase equipment and supplies. Through fundraisers such as Valentine’s Day Ice Cream and Doughnut Sundaes, Spirit Week, and dress-down days, the group worked hard to raise enough money.
After two years of fundraising efforts, the club was finally able to help the team in South Africa. This spring, they purchased soccer balls and pinnies for the players. The team showed profound appreciation for the Monogram Club’s generosity, but Greer said the Monogram members were thrilled to be able to help.
Co-presidents of the Monogram Club for the 2018-19 school year are Grace Cornbrooks ’19 and David Byler ’19. They will look to continue on the tradition of spreading Bulldog spirit throughout the school - and perhaps the globe - next year.
