How long have you been at Norfolk Academy?
I have been at Norfolk Academy for 31 years.

Tell us why you wanted to become an educator:
When I graduated from college, I really wanted to go into ordained ministry. I got a job teaching in a boarding school for a year while I prepared for seminary, and simply fell in love with teaching and counseling. Over the years I have only grown to love them more and more! I so enjoy my relationships with everyone (faculty, students, parents, alumni, etc.) that I could not imagine doing anything else!

What most excites you about working at Norfolk Academy?
Norfolk Academy is a dynamic and fun place to teach and learn. I get excited thinking about what we will be studying in my next psychology class, or what we will be discussing in Peer Counselor training! The students are so interested and interesting! They really help make this a great place to be!

Norfolk Academy is unique because…
...it has such a family atmosphere. We all know each other and care about each other and everyone here has the best interests of the school community and its individual members at heart.

Last book read:
Perelandra by C.S. Lewis
What do you like to do in your own time/when you’re not working?
I love surfing, riding my motorcycle, working out, yoga, reading and taking long walks with my wife, Elizabeth, and my dog, Bexley.
Favorite food?
Steak - as in a big, juicy, T-bone steak!

A movie is being made about your life. Who would they cast to play you?
Gerry Lopez. Not only is he a great surfer and yogi (and my hero), he is also a great actor! He played Subotai, the Hyrkanian archer in Conan the Barbarian.
Fun fact your students might not know about you/might find surprising:
I did not start surfing until I was 39 years old. After my first round of spinal surgery and the resulting rehabilitation, I really wanted to start something new because I could not wrestle anymore, so I started surfing!

“When I grow up, I want to be…”
...like my father, Thomas P. Hudgins. He was the greatest man I have ever known!
