Jazz Bands Earn High Marks in Competition

The school year might be coming to an end, but the Middle and Upper School jazz bands do not look to be slowing down any time soon. On May 3, the bands performed in a jazz band competition against numerous public and private schools at Tallwood High School. Both did exceptionally well, receiving compliments and constructive criticism from the three judges and earning the groups high praise from their director, chorus and jazz band teacher for Middle and Upper School, Dean Englert.

"I am very proud of their hard work and performance," said Mr. Englert. "I am also very pleased with their comportment during the entire trip. They represented Norfolk Academy in the highest tradition."

Various awards were won by individuals in the group. Jessie Tignor '21, earned the trombone award; William Bland '22, took home the honors of top Middle School drummer of the day; and Bascombe Traywick '18, received top Upper School honors on piano.

The Middle School woodwind section, consisting of clarinets, saxophones, and flutes, won the top award with their scores. Congratulations to both bands on their impressive performances!
