How long have you been at Norfolk Academy?
This is my third year at Norfolk Academy.

Tell us why you wanted to become an educator:
I spent 6 years as an environmental educator on boats, canoes and residential island centers in the Bay and then went right back to field education after I earned my master's degree. Moving into the classroom was a natural progression.

What most excites you about working at Norfolk Academy?
Mrs. McLaughlin has supported every idea I have shared with her. The trust the school has in the teachers is also exciting. I work to honor this trust with my best effort.

Norfolk Academy is unique because…
...of the positive culture. The positive tone here sets the stage for students, teachers, and staff to make great things happen.

Last book read:
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari

What do you like to do in your own time/when you’re not working?
Move. I don’t like to sit until I’m too tired to move. I really get a kick out of surfing with my own kids. Pushing kids into waves during summer camp is my second favorite. It is really fun to get over-stoked about a one-foot wave.

Favorite food?
Any kind of cinnamon breakfast roll/pastry/bun or coffee cake creation.

A movie is being made about your life. Who would they cast to play you?
A younger Samuel L. Jackson or Gary Busey (he was epic in Big Wednesday). These two actors would make me look wilder, bigger, and cooler than I am.

Fun fact your students might not know about you/might find surprising:
I kissed the Royal Baby.

“When I grow up, I want to be…”
The dude who helped plant 1,000 trees. I have been sending students home with trees for years, and the 33 trees that I planted in my yard and neighborhood are doing great.
