The Mirari Brass Quintet gave Lower School students a dazzling display of horn-playing on Tuesday with selections from the classical and jazz repertoire.
All members of the group have experience teaching, so they gladly answered questions about their instruments, with many questions going to the trumpet players, who played flugelhorn on a few numbers and even brought out a piccolo trumpet for a demonstration.
The group played one original composition by trumpet player Alex Noppe and concluded with a piece by jazz legend Charles Mingus, a suitable conclusion for a concert during Mardi Gras. The four additional members of the quintet are Matt Vangjel (trumpet), Jessie Thoman (French horn), Chris Van Hof (trombone), and Stephanie Frye-Clark (tuba). The quintet came to Norfolk Academy as part of the Virginia Arts Festival.
