Law Firm Founded by John Cooper ’82 Offers Scholarships Focused on Safe Driving Practices
Norfolk-based Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, led by John Cooper ’82, is pleased to announce the creation of a new scholarship program, which focuses attention on the issue of distracted driving.
John Cooper’s three children (Matthew ’14, Leah ’16, and Camille ’16) attended Norfolk Academy and benefitted from scholarships, allowing them to study at leading universities across the state, he said. “We want to give back to the community and also highlight the dangers of distracted driving.”
Every day, 11 teens on average lose their lives on the roads of the United States because they are texting or engaged in another form of distracted driving, according to a press release from the law firm. According to an AAA poll, 94 percent of teen drivers acknowledge the dangers of texting and driving, but 35 percent admitted to doing it anyway.
Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers will award three scholarships of $2,000 to seniors who graduate in 2018 from schools in the Tidewater and Eastern Shore area. The deadline for applications is May 1.
Entrants should submit an essay of 500 to 1,000 words about the dangers of distracted
driving and how they believe the problem should be tackled. For more details about the Distracted Driving Awareness Scholarships, see Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers’ website.
Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers was established by Mr. Cooper and his business partner, Jim Hurley.
