Varsity Field Hockey Coach Mary Werkheiser Honored as U.S. Coach of the Year

The Field Hockey team has won Tidewater Conference (TCIS) championships for four straight years and the state championship for three out of the past four years. This year’s team, with ten seniors on the roster, had an unbeaten season with 24 wins and was ranked second in the nation among public and private schools.

That incredible record of achievement led to recognition for the team’s head coach, Mary Werkheiser, who has coached at Norfolk Academy for 22 years. She was named U.S. Coach of the Year by Top of the Circle, a blog that is closely followed by field hockey aficionados. The line-up of coaches considered including public and private schools from California to Texas to New Jersey--in other words, all across the country.

Coach Werkheiser was quick to deflect attention, noting that team’s success is due to teamwork among players and coaches, including Assistant Coaches Laura Gibson and Catherine McCallum.

Congrats to Coach Werkheiser and the entire team! Read the blog post from Top of the Circle.
