How long have you been at Norfolk Academy?
This is my 13th year teaching at NA.
Tell us why you wanted to become an educator:
I love it when kids light up when they “get it” -- it’s the happiest feeling in the world!
I “played school” growing up. I played being the teacher for hours and hours. I typed out worksheets on my typewriter and graded papers. When I went to college, I tried first being a business major. Then I changed it to my first love, and the rest is history.
What most excites you about working at Norfolk Academy?
I love the opportunity to go to school everyday together with my son, Wyatt. I love 5th graders! I am always excited to experience with our students so many wonderful resources that we share at Norfolk Academy. I love my teaching partners, the camaraderie of the faculty, and the relationships we share with our students -- and I love that we all have come from so many different places and backgrounds to Norfolk Academy to teach and learn together. I love the many opportunities that students have to thrive in such a dynamic place. I love the teacher/coach relationships that my son is experiencing while he grows up at Norfolk Academy. I get excited everyday when I enter the beautiful classroom and see the courtyard outside my window where I “work.” I love lemon in my iced tea and the delicious lunches with fresh salad and homemade dressing in the refectory everyday.
Norfolk Academy is unique because…
...of the sense of community. Norfolk Academy has a special feel -- like the small town Tennessee school where I grew up. At Norfolk Academy, we are a small town school community in the big city, and our community treats its members with kindness and respect.

What do you like to do in your own time/when you’re not working?
Here in Virginia, we have a Carolina Skiff that we keep at our dock in our backyard on the Lafayette River. We can leave our dock on our boat to see the largest coal port in the northern hemisphere, to see the largest Navy base in the world, or to ride in the Chesapeake Bay or over to the Eastern Shore. We also like to go back home to our farms in Tennessee to be with our family there every chance we can get.
My aunt JoJo’s fried okra, chocolate, and fresh Virginia Eastern Shore raw oysters-on-the-half-shell
A movie is being made about your life. Who would they cast to play you?
Reese Witherspoon - she’s a middle Tennessee girl like me.
Fun fact your students might not know about you/might find surprising:
I’ve been frog hunting…actually more than once.
