The George B. Powell '57 Collection

Tradition & Transformation: Japanese Woodcut Prints

In 2006, Captain George B. Powell ’57 loaned an extensive collection of Japanese woodblock prints to the Perrel Gallery for an exhibition “Tradition & Transformation: Japanese Woodcut Prints”. The prints illustrate the history, politics, theater, music, art, legends, philosophy, and favorite pastimes of Japan from the 18th through early 20th century during its transformation from isolation to world engagement. This loan later became a gift and has been expanded to include other Asian artifacts, books, and educational materials.
