The Johnson Theater, which features cutting-edge technology and extraordinary acoustics, is an active place on campus. Senior speakers deliver their speeches to the Upper School from the stage. Guest speakers, including many alumni, inspire students with wise words. And visiting musicians, particularly from the Virginia Arts Festival, perform for students and the Hampton Roads community.
Norfolk Academy has two dance studios, which are in active use during the school day with the Lower School dance program. After school, the Dance Team moves in, preparing for performances that feature innovative choreography, creative set and costume design, and unconventional music.
The music room, which features natural lighting and tiered seating, is well-equipped to launch students on adventures in sound!
The Lower School art room is a bright, airy space with ample room to spread out and create. Middle School students study art during 9th grade in a well-equipped art room upstairs in the Tucker Arts Center, while Upper School artists pursue Studio Art classes in an expansive arts corridor downstairs.
The Digital Production Lab features Apple computers with professional video, audio, film, and digital art production software. The lab is the center for film, broadcasting and communications courses and is used by classes and programs for cross-curricular production work.
The campus features 11 small practice rooms for private lessons and chamber music. There are four large rehearsal spaces for large band, string, and vocal ensembles.
The Lower School’s band, orchestra, and chorus practice upstairs in the newly expanded Lower School, which also includes an array of studios for private instrumental lessons. Middle and Upper School musicians have separate rehearsal spaces in the Tucker Arts Center.
Made possible through the generosity of the Allen E. Perrel family, the gallery is a cornerstone of the visual arts. It is the focus of revolving exhibits by local artists and showcases for our students’ artistic creations.
The John H. Tucker Jr. Arts Center features the Samuel C. Johnson Theater, a 575-seat theater, as well as dance and art studios, choral, band and orchestra rooms, practice rooms designated for private music lessons and a digital movie editing lab.
