Batten Leadership Program

group of girls

Norfolk Academy develops civic-minded, socially aware and active leaders as an essential component of our educational program.

Our approach to Leadership is rooted in central tenets of the school’s Statement of Philosophy and Objectives -- above all, its focus on character development: “To live by our conviction that sound moral and spiritual values define the individual in a more significant way than academic achievement.”

From the moment our youngest students step to the front of the class to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and present a creative project as Boy or Girl of the Day, they begin learning about leadership. That is just the beginning. Our students learn about leadership through the intersection of academics, co-curricular, and extra-curricular involvement, and their journeys to understanding leadership reflect the individual choices they make along the way. Some may serve as members of our Middle or Upper School Honor Councils, or as Fellows in the Batten Leadership Program. Others may be recognized by their peers as leaders in classroom discussions, creative pursuits, or athletics. The choice lies with each student.

THE BATTEN LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

The Batten Leadership Program reinforces and strengthens the school's commitment to producing principled, civic-minded leaders through three signature programs: the Batten Leadership Fellows, a three-year, selective, co-curricular, experiential, academic leadership program with five tracks; The Leadership Lab, a 4-year series of academic and experiential laboratories for all ninth graders and continued optional labs for students in grades 10 through 12; and the Medical Scholars, a series of medical education programs and internships for interested Upper School students.

Fellows Programs

Chesapeake Bay

Through an interdisciplinary approach that extends education beyond the classroom (includes working with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation), the program engages Fellows in environmental scholarship incorporating science, English, math, history, political science, and the arts.

Global Affairs

The Global Affairs Fellows seek to make the world a more peaceful and just place. Through case studies, simulations, independent research, and collaboration with community partners both locally and abroad, students develop a deeper understanding of the conflicts and challenges created by globalization and learn how to craft and communicate their own solutions to complex global problems.

Global Health

Employing an interdisciplinary approach that extends beyond the classroom, Fellows study global health interventions, particularly in resource-limited settings such as Haiti and Belize, via case study analysis, in-country experience, independent research, international peer collaboration, and preprofessional internships.

Literacy

Understanding that skills in reading and writing are crucial for empowered and responsible citizens, the program serves to advance literacy as a way to break cycles of poverty in Hampton Roads and beyond. Fellows work to develop their own writing ability, while collaborating with outside organizations and communities to gain knowledge of the far-reaching implications of literacy.

The earlier in their careers that exceptional students begin to think of themselves as future public leaders who can promote a better society, the greater the likelihood they will become such leaders.
