Grayson Fiveash '21

University of Virginia

“Through my 12 years at Norfolk Academy, this school has taught me so much and molded me into the individual I am today. I have learned the value of hard work and honor. Teachers since first grade have encouraged me to be ambitious in all aspects of my life. Now, I consider determination to be one of my greatest traits because of the way my teachers have taught me to strive for goals through hard work. It has also taught me to be grateful for every opportunity offered.”

Peer Counselor, Class VP, Happy Club (Exec), Varsity Field Hockey, Varsity Lacrosse

Three Words to Describe the Class of 2021: Grateful, Positive, Ambitious

Favorite Refectory Meal: Grilled Cheese

Most Meaningful Activity
Throughout Upper School, I have devoted much of my time to athletics. I have been on an athletic team every season since ninth grade. I credit the athletic program with shaping me as an individual. Sports at NA have taught me how to be a leader, hold myself accountable, remain determined, and better my communication skills. The best part of my time on NA sports teams has been the sense of community I have felt, and it has bettered friendships that I hold so close to my heart.

Reflections on Learning
My best classroom memory was in Dr. Lindbeck’s Western Civilization class in 10th grade. One day, we spent class talking about the history of almost every holiday you could imagine. His class taught me so much about world history, but I also remember that class as being one of the most enjoyable during my time at Norfolk Academy. I never left his class without laughing.

Inspirational Teacher-Coach
Señora Winn has had the biggest impact on me and has fostered my passion for Spanish and Operation Smile. Whenever I need to talk, she listens and has been a friend since she was my JV lacrosse coach. She also has taught me so much about the Spanish language in the short year that I have had her and it amazes me that I am currently reading an entire book in Spanish thanks to her. She has also supported me and my journey with Operation Smile.

Advice for My Fellow Bulldogs
Be so incredibly grateful for your time at Norfolk Academy and don’t take it for granted. You may not even realize how important it is to you until you are spending your last days here. So, cherish the relationships with your teachers, the friendships you’ve made, and the traditions. Be as present as you can during your high school experience because Norfolk Academy is such an incredible place.

A Quick Word About Grayson
“Grayson Fiveash is a phenomenal student, athlete, and human being. Most importantly, Grayson is kind. She lends an ear to anyone who needs it. Her peers trust her, as proven by her election to student government for four consecutive years and her role as a peer counselor. At our lunch table, she prioritizes talking through issues with her friends. She even took time out of her busy schedule to plan a surprise baby shower for me when I was expecting a baby girl last year! She is refreshingly empathetic and deeply cares for the people in her community.” ~ Ms. Taylor Winn, Grayson’s Advisor and Spanish Teacher

The thing that most makes me a Bulldog is… my work ethic.
