“Norfolk Academy has developed me into the leader I am today. It began in first grade with ‘Boy of the Day’ and has culminated in me speaking to Upper School students and faculty about the importance of celebrating Black achievement and Black history.”

Three Adjectives to Describe the Class of 2021: Warm, Vibrant, Intelligent

Most Meaningful Activity
Leading during a pandemic has its own set of challenges, but working with and learning from my TSC peers has been the most rewarding experience I have had as an Upper School student. I am blown away by our student body’s resilience, creativity, and adaptability.

Beyond the Classroom
My favorite non-classroom experiences at Norfolk Academy have to be my conversations with History Department teachers. Whether we are discussing speech topics or politics, Dr. Rezelman, Dr. Lindbeck, and Mr. McMahon challenge and deepen my understanding of the world.

Reflections on Learning
My favorite classroom experiences have been talking to Dr. Kidd about the greatest works of literature. Our talks during Philosophical Literature were particularly insightful as they deepened my understanding beyond literary works. Dr. Kidd’s recommendation led me to visit The Hungarian Pastry Shop in Manhattan’s Upper West Side where generations of authors and students have gone to read and discuss literature much like we do in our classroom.

Inspirational Teacher-Coach
Mr. Watson is neither my teacher nor my coach, but he exemplifies the nature of Norfolk Academy teachers and has had a great impact on me as a person. Through our casual conversation, Mr. Watson learned of my love of Russian Language and Literature, which opened a discussion that deepened my connection to the language through a famous Russian literary character that I identified with. By sharing his knowledge, Mr. Watson broadened my understanding of Russian and Black history.

A Quick Word About Frank
“Frank is an outstanding student in every way, and anyone will benefit from some time with him. Whether you are talking with Frank about Russian literature or Childish Gambino music videos, you know that you are in the presence of a deep thinker who does not settle for easy answers. Our Student Council President, Frank is a leader in our community, and he conducts himself as a gentleman and a scholar in all that he does. Frank is great company, and he could join in a faculty discussion and practically be on equal intellectual footing. He is intellectually trenchant, and I believe that’s one of the many signs that Frank’s leadership days are just getting started. I am certain he will bring hard and thoughtful work and leadership to his college community.” ~ Dr. David Kidd, Frank’s English Teacher
