Upper School School Counseling

Guidance in grades 10 – 12 focuses on supporting students and their families dealing with a variety of individual, familial, and societal issues.

These issues may involve problems of an academic, social, or emotional nature, and the school counselor is always happy to give support to students and their families.

Upper School students may apply for the Peer Counseling Program. Peer Counselors serve as mentors, tutors, confidantes, and counselors to students in grades 7-12. They undergo over 12 hours of training in crisis intervention and general person-centered counseling during the month of August and continue their training throughout the school year. During these monthly training sessions, they work towards a greater understanding of mental health and common mental illnesses, human relationships and sexuality, suicide prevention, substance use and abuse, and other topics of interest and/or concern. They also receive training regarding when they must refer students to one of the school counselors, and when they are allowed to handle a situation by themselves. And yet we constantly emphasize the "teamwork" aspect of counseling, and that they can always seek guidance from one of the school counselors if they so desire. In addition to providing emotional support and helpful information to their peers, Peer Counselors provide academic tutoring to students in grades 7 – 12 who request such assistance. The only position in the school voted on by both students and faculty, selection is a statement of confidence in a student’s maturity and ability to empathize.
