Application Process

  • Application, Fee, and Photo

    Parents should complete the online Application for Admission. Applications for the 2018-19 school year will be available on October 1, 2017. 

    A non-refundable fee is required with each application.
    • Grades 1-3: $60 application and testing fee
    • Grades 4 & 5: $60 application fee  (An additional testing fee of $80 is paid directly to SSAT. If this fee presents a problem, please call the Admissions Office.)
    • Grades 6-12: $60 application fee (An additional testing fee of $132 is paid directly to SSAT. If this fee presents a problem, please call the Admissions Office.)
    Applications submitted after the January 31, 2018 deadline will be reviewed for any available spaces at each grade level.  


  • Record Release and Recommendation Forms

    Download, complete, and sign the top section of the Student Record Release Form and submit to the Principal, Guidance Counselor, or other appropriate official at your child's current school.  The school official should complete the form and send it and all records directly to the Norfolk Academy Admissions Office.  When you complete the Online Application for Admission these forms are available in the application. 
     
    Download, complete, and sign the top section of the appropriate Confidential Teacher Recommendation Form and submit to your child's current teacher(s).  Note that two forms are required for grades 7 - 12.  As a courtesy, please provide the teacher with a stamped envelope addressed to the Norfolk Academy Admissions Office.  When you complete the Online Application for Admission the recommendation forms are available in the online application. 

    Please do not submit these forms to the teachers and school before December 1, 2017. 
  • School Meetings, Interviews, and Visits

    Upon receipt of the application, Norfolk Academy will contact you to schedule interviews and visits.
     
    Grades 1-3:
    Every parent or guardian is asked to meet with a member of the Admissions staff. This half-hour meeting usually coincides with your child's individual evaluation. At this time, parents also have the opportunity to tour the school with a Parent Ambassador.
     
    Grades 4 and 5:
    Every parent or guardian of an applicant to grades 4 and 5 is asked to meet with a member of the Admissions staff.
     
    Grade 6:
    Applicants to grade 6 are required to interview with the Director of the Lower School or one of the Assistant Directors. Applicants are encouraged to participate in an optional half-day visit in the sixth grade classrooms (8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.). A parent meeting and tour will occur on the visit day at either 8:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. 
     
    Grades 7-9:
    Applicants are required to spend a full day shadowing a current student in the grade to which they are applying. During this time the applicant also will meet with a member of the Admissions staff and Director of the Middle School.

    Grades 10-12:
    Upper School applicants may be asked to interview with the Director of the Upper School.
  • Admissions Testing

    Grade 1
    Upon receipt of the application, a two-part evaluation is scheduled through the Admissions Office:

    1. A one-hour individual session with the school's psychologist to evaluate the applicant's cognitive ability. These sessions are held during the week and will begin in November. 

    2. A one-hour group session with other first grade applicants. These sessions will be scheduled by the Admissions Office for either Saturday, January 27 or Saturday, February 10. 

    Grades 2 and 3

    Upon receipt of the application, an individual session with the school’s psychologist is scheduled to evaluate the applicant’s cognitive ability. These sessions are held during the week and will begin in November. 
     
    Grades 4-12

    Applicants to grades 4-12 are required to take the Secondary Schools Admissions Test (SSAT) on either Saturday, January 27 or Saturday, February 10.  

    Please note that SSAT requires a testing fee ($80 for grades 4 and 5 and $132 for grades 6-12. If this fee presents a problem, please call the Admissions Office.)
    • Applicants must register for testing at www.ssat.org.
    • Norfolk Academy’s school code is 5375.
    • Be sure to select Norfolk Academy (5375) as a score recipient.
    You must have submitted an admissions application to Norfolk Academy before attending the testing session.

    We will be glad to reschedule students who are unable to attend a Saturday session because of religious considerations.

    If you plan to apply to more than one school, please let us know. We will share test scores with other independent schools.

Students with applications completed by the January 31 deadline will receive a decision letter by mid-March.  We will continue to accept applications and conduct admissions testing after the deadline and will make decisions based on academic qualifications and space availability.

2018 Testing Dates:

Individual testing for grades 1-3 will be administered on weekdays.
