Academy TEAMS Earn Top Rankings in Virginia

4/27/2012
Sixteen Norfolk Academy Upper School students competed on two teams in the Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) competition this year.  The Norfolk Academy Varsity and JV teams earned first and fourth place in the state respectively.  The teams await further news of national rankings.  Visit the TEAMS website to learn more about scoring.

This year's Varsity team members were Andrew Balitsky '12, Shanu Dhali '12, Chandler Archbell '12, Haley Bauser '12, McCall Huston '12, Shepp McCain '12, John Vahedi-Faridi '12 and Kyle Wijtmans '12.  Members of the JV team were Libby Henry '13, Ian Tembe '13, Harper Dodd '13, Carter Hall '13, Faith Huynh '13, Alan Salimov '13, Joe Bedford '14, and Maggie Pecsok '14.  Both teams are coached by Upper School physics teacher Mr. Charles Merriam.

The test consists of two parts, each lasting 90 minutes.  In the first part, teams must answer 80 questions, evenly divided among 10 topics in math and science (with a heavy emphasis on physics).  In the second part, students must write eight essays about questions specifically chosen from the previous topics.  Varsity and JV teams complete identical contests, but compete on different levels.  According to TEAMS, the Virginia state results of the first part yielded an average of 48 correct.  The varsity team answered 64 correctly, while the JV team answered 52 correctly.

Congratulations to both teams!
