Enrichment at the Academy offers extra-curricular opportunities for students after school and on Saturdays. These programs are open to the public.
Bulldog Athletic Programs are run by Norfolk Academy varsity coaches, and varsity players and other coaches are on hand to help the students learn basic skills. Most often, clinics and games are held on Saturdays.

What to bring/wear? For the first two weeks, students will wear sweatpants and a t-shirt. After that, Sensei Andre can order a traditional gi for each student (approximate cost is $25).
*Note: Students participating in the Norfolk Academy class are allowed to attend any class offered at the Virginia Beach Genbu-Kai dojo free of charge. The dojo is located at 1537 Laskin Road, The Friends School in Virginia Beach. Classes at the dojo are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m., and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m.
|Dance: Ballet & Tap |
This sixteen week class series is designed to build dance technique and musicality while encouraging creativity through the medium of dance. In this session, we will learn several dances that will be performed in the Lower School Spring Dance concert in May 2014 (date and time of concert TBA).
Ms. Aimee will pick up students in the Lower School at the bus bell (3:15pm). At 5:00pm, students not picked up in the Dance Studios (Tucker Arts) will be taken to Afterschool Care. Students must wear pink tights, black leotard, pink ballet shoes, and black tap shoes. About the Instructor: Aimée Long, dance instructor for Norfolk Academy, is a native of Virginia Beach. She holds a Master of Arts in Dance Education from the University of North Carolina. She also graduated Magna Cum Laude from Belhaven University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ballet. She is a certified Pilates Mat instructor and has developed a resistance band conditioning class that focuses on the needs of dancers.

Learn How to make a “Breakaway Box” that unfolds to hold a complete miniature room - perfect as a decoration in your home or as a gift.

Special Notes: Partners are required for children who are first time “box-makers.” (A person accompanying a student to assist the child in making a “breakaway box” is included in the student’s fee. An adult, teen, grandparent or experienced box maker is a good partner.) Adults may also enroll in the class alone.
A supply list will be mailed the week of class. You may purchase the materials on your own before the class begins, or on the day of class you may purchase a kit containing fabric, felt, ribbon for $15. The fee for the box kit should be paid to Patty Klewans.
Please remember to bring your lunch and a snack.
|Bulldog Sailing (Grades 5 & 6) **Starts April 28|
The Spring Sailing Clinic is designed to teach upper-elementary NA students about the sport of sailing. Taught by the Varsity Sailing Coach, with the help of Varsity sailors, the clinic welcomes sailors with any level of experience. We will teach the basics of sailing and introduce the idea of sailboat racing, but focus on inspiring interest about being on the water in a sailboat. Feeling comfortable on boats and around the water is helpful, but not a requirement. We will spend three afternoons learning to rig and launch a sailboat, and learning how to safely sail around Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.

Cost: $90.00 per sailor (includes all 3 dates)
Location: Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. Students will meet Mr. Knape in the lower school lobby and ride together in a Norfolk Academy van to the site. Parents must pick up their chidlren from Norfolk Yacht and Country Club at 5:45 each evening.
**Each Sailor must bring suitable outside attire, including water shoes or old tennis shoes. Each sailor must bring with them and wear at all times a coast guard approved PFD (lifejacket). Sunscreen and swim trunks are highly recommended.

Soccer Shots is a national program teaching children the beautiful game of soccer. One of our trademarks is the developmentally appropriate curriculum we use that emphasizes creative play, enjoyment of sport, and character building lessons. The girls should plan to meet Coach Werkheiser at the BUS BELL in the Lower School girls' locker room each day of the clinic. They will walk together to the field, and can be picked up in front of the Lower School at 5:15. Any child who has not been picked up by 5:20 will be escorted to the Lower School Aftercare program, where you can pick them up any time before 6:00 pm (additional charges apply to Aftercare). Please send a note to Coach Werkheiser any day that you would like your daughter to be picked up by anyone other than one of her parents.

What to bring: We have all the equipment your daughter will need, but the girls are welcome to bring their own (please be sure to put names on any personal items). Girls should be dressed in athletic clothing that is appropriate for the weather. Cleats are optional.
The girls should plan to meet Coach Scimeca at the BUS BELL in the Lower School gym each day of the clinic (please send a note to this effect to your child's teacher on the first day of the clinic). They will walk together to the varsity softball field, and can be picked up in front of the Upper School Athletic Pavilion at 5:00. Any child who has not been picked up by 5:15 will be escorted to the Lower School Aftercare program, where you can pick them up any time before 6:00 pm (additional charges apply to Aftercare). |Competitive Stroke Development |
The six-week program is designed to prepare competitive swimmers. Participants must be able to complete 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke in order to get the most out of this experience. Emphasis will be placed on proper stroke mechanics for each of the four competitive strokes – freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke. Stroke drills, proper race strategies, and basic training techniques will be introduced according to the swimmer’s age and abilities.

Special Instructions: Coaches will meet students Lower School students in the lobby at the bus bell and walk them to the pool. Parents should pick up students in the pool lobby. Lower School Students not picked up by 5:00 p.m. will be taken to After Care. **Due to required supervision ratios, coaches will be unable to accomadate variations to the schedule you choose for your child - even in the event that your child is out sick or when there is a day off from school.
|Swim America |
Swim America is a learn-to-swim program taught in 10 stations. Every student progresses at his or her own rate, independent of other student’s development. Safety is the main objective of our program. We emphasize proper technique, body position, breathing, and good swimming strokes. The program teaches all four stroke, starts, and turns. Swim America programs are set up to have small swimmer to coach ratios. All coaches are certified by the American Swimming Coaches Association. Instructor

|Lifeguard Classes - Training and Recertification|
The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Program is intended to train individuals in the skills and knowledge needed to lifeguard at aquatic facilities.
The Lifeguard Training Program is 30 hours in length. The pre-requisite test is held on the first day. With successful completion of all required skills and knowledge tests, students will receive certification in the following: Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (two years).
