Step 1: Submit Application, Fee and Photo
|Parents should complete the online Application for Admission. A non-refundable fee is required with each application.|
Any application received after January 31, 2014 automatically will be considered for the waiting pool.
- Grades 1-3: $100 application and testing fee
- Grades 4 and 5: $50 application and testing fee
- Grades 6-12: $50 application fee (An additional $120 testing fee is paid directly to SSAT.)
Step 2: Submit Record Release and Recommendation Forms to Current School
Download, complete, and sign the top section of the Student Record Release Form and submit to the Principal, Guidance Counselor, or other appropriate official at your child's current school. The school official should complete the form and send it and all records directly to the Norfolk Academy Admissions Office. When you complete the Online Application for Admission these forms are available in the application. Please do not submit these forms to the school before December 1.
Download, complete, and sign the top section of the appropriate Confidential Teacher Recommendation Form and submit to your child's current teacher(s). Note that two forms are required for grades 7 - 12. As a courtesy, please provide the teacher with a stamped envelope addressed to the Norfolk Academy Admissions Office. When you complete the Online Application for Admission the recommendation forms are available in the online application. Please do not submit these forms to the teacher(s) before December 1.
Step 3: Participate in School Meetings, Interviews, and (or) Visits
Upon receipt of the application, Norfolk Academy will contact you to schedule interviews and visits.
Every parent or guardian is asked to meet with a member of the Admissions staff. This meeting usually coincides with your child's individual evaluation.
Grades 4 and 5:
Every parent or guardian of an applicant to grades 4 and 5 is asked to meet with a member of the Admissions staff.
Applicants to Grade 6 are required to interview with the Director of the Lower School or one of the Assistant Directors. During this time, applicants and their parent(s) also will meet with a member of the Admissions staff and tour the sixth grade classrooms.
Applicants are required to spend a full day shadowing a current student in the grade to which they are applying. During this time the applicant also will meet with a member of the Admissions staff and Director of the Middle School.
Upper School applicants may be asked to interview with the Director of the Upper School.
Step 4: Participate in Admissions Testing
Upon receipt of the application, a two-part evaluation is scheduled through the Admissions Office.
1. Each applicant will meet with the school's psychologist to evaluate cognitive ability. This appointment is scheduled on weekdays and takes about an hour.
2. Each applicant will participate in a one-hour group session. These sessions are held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 or Saturday, February 1, 2014.
Grades 2 and 3
Upon receipt of the application, a one-hour individual session with the school’s psychologist is scheduled to evaluate the applicant’s cognitive ability.
Grades 4 and 5
Upon receipt of the application, Admissions testing will scheduled by the Admissions Office for Saturday, January 25, 2014 or Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 8:30 AM.
Applicants to grades 6-12 are required to take the Secondary Schools Admissions Test (SSAT). Testing sessions will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 or Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 8:30 AM at Norfolk Academy. Please note that SSAT requires a testing fee of $120 (if this fee presents a problem, please call the Norfolk Academy Admissions Office).
- Applicants must register for testing at www.ssat.org.
- Norfolk Academy’s school code is 5375.
- Choose either testing date (Jan. 25 or Feb. 1).
- Be sure to select Norfolk Academy (5375) as a score recipient.
You must have submitted an admissions application to Norfolk Academy before attending the testing session.
We will be glad to reschedule students who are unable to attend a Saturday session because of religious considerations.
If you plan to apply to more than one school, please let us know. We are glad to share test scores with other independent schools.
