Norfolk Academy’s Alumni Association is very pleased to begin its twelfth summer of internship offerings through the Alumni Career Connection Program. This program’s goal is to connect current students and young alumni with alumni and Academy friends who are already established in the workforce. Upper School interns will have the opportunity to pursue genuine interests beyond the curricular offerings of the school, broadening their experiences and readying themselves for the independence the college admissions process brings. Young alumni in college will gain insight into career opportunities and first-job prospects.  This unique program creates strong personal ties between Norfolk Academy and its wide range of constituencies. The career guidance and first-hand experience provided are priceless in the current job market.

Already as of November 2015 in its first year of operation, 757 Angels has helped raise over $2 million for promising new ventures. An internship with 757 Angels would be a true journey into entrepreneurialism.

    757 Angels has a rigorous selection process which occurs in 3 scheduled cycles per calendar year. After reviewing initial applications received for each cycle in an in-depth manner, the organization leadership arranges in-person “Pitch Meetings” with finalists. Along the way, 757 Angels also provides feedback and mentorship to applying companies. 

    The offered NA student internship would be in June 2016 for a 2 week, unpaid basis. The intern would assist the Executive Director in organizing a Membership Database, crafting Public Relations (including Social Media & eNews), and providing support for all Entrepreneur & Investor/Member communications. The intern would also be able to participate in wrap-up communications to participants in the “Pitch Meeting” of the second cycle for an exciting first-hand learning experience.

They will be exposed to the function of bakery equipment, learn general baking terminology, bakers’ math, and the main ingredients of bread and pastry. Students will roll up their sleeves and be introduced to the process of dough making, fermentation, shaping, and baking. They will practice beginner shaping techniques and learn what characteristics are desirable in properly baked goods. This 4-week unpaid internship is a wonderful opportunity for any student to learn the art of baking!

Each year, Breakthrough enrolls approximately sixty students led by a group of fifteen teachers.     We are looking for recent NA alumni interested in making a positive impact on children. This position requires energy, commitment, the desire to teach, and a personal investment in the lives of middle school students. The program runs weekdays from June 16th to July 30th. The ForKids Development Team works to further public awareness of our homeless community’s needs and the services ForKids provides. Community relations play an important role in raising support for these services and clients. A Development Internship is available for this summer.  This opportunity will provide a unique experience for individuals with an interest in non-profit development and communications. Expert witness court testimony and consultation are also conducted regularly.     Scheduling and location of services varies, as Dr. Gildea travels around the Hampton Roads region to conduct assessments on-site at area Departments of Social Services and other office locations.     Summer Art Camp Intern:  The Hermitage Museum is offering a 3-4 week summer internship experience for a rising senior or college student who will provide assistance with our Kid’s Summer Art Camps. The intern will provide assistance to the Education Manager and will complete a range of projects: everything from processing camp registrations to providing hands-on assistance with camp activities. Previous experience working with children is preferred but not required. This internship is unpaid and allows for flexibility, but it must fall within the timeframe of camp.
     
    Marketing Intern:  The Hermitage Museum is offering a summer internship experience for a high school or college student in our marketing department. The internship will be 1-2 weeks in length and focus on digital marketing to include use of Constant Contact, social media, and online resources to market the museum. An interest in photography, design, and writing is preferred. This is an unpaid internship and the timeframe is flexible.

    The Jordan-Young Institute for Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine (JYI) and The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter (CHKD) is offering a combined internship for those who are interested in the field of Sports Medicine. The Sports Medicine team is comprised of both primary care Sports Medicine physicians as well as orthopedic surgeons who treat a variety of athletic related injuries in the pediatric through adult population.
     
    This internship is for a college level student interested in pursuing medical school with potential interest in the field of Sports Medicine. Participants will shadow physicians in both the office and operating room setting. The goal of this rotation will be to observe and interact with physicians in the field and gain understanding as to the spectrum of non-operative and operative problems which are encountered by athletes at all levels. Interns will typically spend four weeks rotating between participating physicians from JYI and CHKD. Physicians who will be participating in this internship will include: Dr. Kevin Bonner, Dr. Joel Brenner, Dr. Allison Crepeau, Dr. Marc Cardelia and Dr. Allison Tenfelde. 
     
    This is an unpaid internship. Hours will vary based on physician’s schedule. Proof of a recent negative PPD test is required. If you get ill or uncomfortable with the sight of blood or watching surgical procedures, this internship is not for you. This internship is best suited for a college student with endeavors to attend medical school and potential interest in the field of Sports Medicine.

    Tidewater Arts Outreach (TAO) shares the joy and healing power of the arts by matching community artists with opportunities to share their talents with people who are isolated from society throughout Hampton Roads. TAO artists interface with people of all ages who struggle with disability, poverty, infirmity, old age and more. Through the arts, TAO brings hope, inspiration, compassion and creativity to thousands of people in more than 70 congregate care settings (nursing homes, dependent care day and residential programs, family homeless shelters, hospitals, etc.).
     
    TAO has internship opportunities in their Ghent office. Interns are needed for marketing, social media, office and program support internships are available.  These unpaid positions are 8-10 hours per week and will give students valuable opportunities to work in nonprofit communications and programs. Students will work in an office environment.  Work includes TAO programs survey data entry, generation of reports using Access and Excel software and reviewing for accuracy and correcting where needed.  Communications work includes monitoring social media sites and suggesting/implementing strategies for retention and growth, developing content based on survey comments and online industry news, and layout and design for a variety of materials.     The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Norfolk Division, is a trial court in the federal court system that hears a wide variety of criminal and civil cases. The District Court judges are supported by an administrative assistant, two law clerks, a courtroom deputy clerk, a court security officer, and a court reporter. The intern will have an opportunity to observe court proceedings as well as the working relationship between the judges and their staffs. The intern will also have an opportunity to observe the functioning of the Court’s Clerk’s Office and Probation Office as well as the Court’s electronic filing system. 
     
    At the outset, the intern will confer with the judges’ support staffs regarding the requirement of confidentiality.   District Judges Raymond A. Jackson, Mark S. Davis, Arenda L. Wright Allen, and Henry Coke Morgan, Jr., and their respective staffs are participating in the internship program. It is recommended that applicants have completed at least one year of college or university and have an interest in a legal career when applying for the one-week internship.  This is an unpaid internship.

    The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is an accredited museum seeking motivated interns to assist with our summer youth and family programming.  During the summer, MOCA reaches hundreds of children ages 6-11 with our incredibly popular Art Camp.  Qualified interns would be high school juniors and seniors with a passion for art and children with the availability to gain at least 4 weeks of experience assisting professional art instructors with executing their lesson plans in the art classroom.   Accepted interns will gain skills in leadership, teaching, and visual arts while working in a fast-paced and creative environment.  Intern hours would be 8:30am-3:30pm Monday-Friday for at least 4 weeks throughout the summer, as well as occasional weeknight and weekend events such as Family Fest and Family Night approximately 4 times throughout the summer.  MOCA internships are unpaid.
